Domain 7 Communication

Elaboration:
Today after school I was signing planners. I had to write several notes home because of children who had not been following procedures. Today I realized that many of the children really see me as someone in charge and don't mess around. Especially in contrast to the substitutes that were around. Also, I wrote several notes home to parents that were positive because I had a few students who did really well. There was one boy who is almost always the "perfect" student, and he said to me, "I wonder why no one ever writes a note in my planner." So I wrote a note in his planner. Although he is almost always good, I think it was still nice for him to be reminded that it is truly appreciated.
Analysis:
Communication with parents through notes can be very tricky. I always try to give both positive and disciplinary notes home when needed. The children just beam when you give them a positive note in their planners and really love it. I love seeing the way they respond to the positive reinforcement.

Positive words can go a long way. When we keep communication open and offer positive comments, it is easier when we have more challenging issues. A parent who only hears from a teacher in negative circumstances is less willing to listen and often more defensive. Regular, ongoing communication builds trust.
