Domain 6: Management of Time, Classroom, and Behaviors
Elaboration:
Today during health class I had a lot of trouble with the kids. They did not seem to want to listen, not matter how many times I stopped the lesson and reminded them of what they were supposed to be doing. Some of them just kept talking the entire time and did not want to work at all. They had a lot of trouble following directions.
Analysis:
Looking back, I think a part of this was that they had just finished ISTEP testing. Although we were doing something a bit more fun, I think that they had just had too much sitting. Afterward, they had P.E. which helped a little bit. I think the next time they have a difficult morning, I will try and and provide a different sort of activity. I think one of the things with management, is putting myself in their place. I often forget what it is like to sit and do things for long amounts of time. Learning can be hard work. I think I expect things of them that I don't expect of myself, then I don't understand why they are having trouble. Also, I must make sure that I continue to reinforce expectations. It does become difficult when it seems as if everyone is breaking them. I always feel like it would be ridiculous to have the entire class clip a strip.

You bring up a really good point. We probably couldn't sit as long as we often expect of our students. You can monitor what your students need by their behaviors. I am glad you are recognizing and responding to what they need.
